It is ever so noticeable on the court against Venus, as there is a clear psychological barrier in playing her older sister. Can Serena step up to the challenge to beat her older sister? Will Serena be bringing her A-game to the open? Can she progress to victory under all of the expectations and pressure she places on herself?
Of course, like last year, the winner may not come from one of the Top 5 but from an outsider. Monica Seles, Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo are the next challengers to the throne and have the experience, the talent and the reputation to take the title. Could a talented youngster such as Iroda Tulyaganova or Elena Dementieva surprise this year? Perhaps a veteran who wants to prove she can hang with the current crop of youngsters, such as Sandrine Testud, Amanda Coetzer Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario? Maybe even former champion Mary Pierce? All will be revealed in the near future.
