Sanex WTA Tour 2001The Roland Garros final: Arguably the best match of the year featuring Kim Clijsters and Jennifer Capriati. Clijsters was determined to win her first Grand Slam event while Capriati was determined to keep the fairytale of the Grand Slam alive. It started with Clijsters dominating the first set as frustration set in for the heavily favoured Capriati. She gained composure in the second set and toughed it out before the ensuing battle of the third set weighed in on both players. A war of attrition on a tennis court, it was a test of wills and determination like no other. The Williams show: Many will say that the hype surrounding them is overdone but many will also say that that hype is justified. The Williams sisters broke their opposition down at the US Open en route to a clash in the finals. While Venus and Serena are ranked #3 and #6 in the world respectively, it is hard to argue that at their best they appear as #1 and #2. Maybe in the future their self-proclamations could come true. Jennifer Capriati winning the Australian Open: Winning a grand slam title was always going to end in fairytale style, but the way she won was a fairytale in itself. After serving to stay in the match against Henrieta Nagyova in the first round, Capriati won seven straight matches, including back-to-back wins over Seles, Davenport and Hingis, to win her first Grand Slam title. It was a fairytale story to a tumultous career for an ultra-talented former teen phenom. And of course, the fairytale didn’t end there as she went on to notch her second major at Roland Garros and capturing the #1 ranking for three weeks at the end of the year.
