So, who are you betting on for the French?

campaign against Zimbabwe (which we unbelievably lost!!!). Both Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge were noted to have criticised Mark Philippoussis' selfish stance at the Davis Cup, and I for one (although this is not being impartial as a real writer should be) agree with the Woodies. Philippoussis has rightly been nicknamed 'Sillypoussis' in Australia. However, the managed to put it all behind them and play some fantastic tennis at the World Team Championships. They reached the semi-final stage, defeating the US 2-1in round robin play (the US surprisingly went through the whole tournament without a single win on their hands) and Sweden 3-0. We await the results of that tournament, which I may briefly add at the end of this article after I've submitted in (I had planned to submit this article today, Saturday, and if time permits, I will add those results to this article after submission if time permits). However, the Czechs have made the final - we await on the other team to play them in the final tomorrow.

Meanwhile, nothing really special happened with the other tournaments this week - although, I have to say that one of my favourite players on the women's side, Amanda Coetzer, is not having a great time. She lost at the Italian Open in the third round to Ai Sugiyama 46 62 63 and she lost at the Internationaux de Strasbourg as the top seed in the quarter finals to eventual finalist, Julie Halard-Decugis 76 (3) 62. The worrying thing is that she has hundreds of points to defend this coming fortnight as she was a semi-finalist at the French last year, defeating Steffi Graf in the quarters last year. Oh well!

Before I conclude this article, there will be a few changes coming into the next fortnight with respect to the tennis topic. Unfortunately, due to time restraints, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot report on every single aspect that needs to be reported on, without serving a terrible injustice. So, myself, and the team at Suite101 have decided to split the tennis topic into two parts: tennis-men's and tennis-women's. An enthusiastic writer and keen tennis fan, university student Joel Hunt, will take on board the role as contributing editor for Men's Tennis (ATP Tour) and I will take on board the role as contributing editor for Women's Tennis (WTA Tour). I will continue to write my articles bi-weekly,
