A fortnight till the French :o)

© Michael Cecilio

WOW!! So much has happened in the past fortnight that I don't know where to begin! How can one article possibly capture every single event, every single match of every single tournament that has occurred in the past fortnight?!?! IMPOSSIBLE. With a fortnight to go 'til the French, things are really beginning to heat up!! Stars who haven't played so well this season are really starting to blossom, come fortnight to the French Open.

To shed some light on just how many tournaments there are to report about in the past fortnight, well, there are at least eight tournaments that I can think of right now from the top of my head. (From April 27-May 3; ATP tournaments: Czech Open - Prague, AT&T Challenge - Atlanta, Munich Open; WTA tournaments: Hamburg Open, Croatian Bol Ladies Tournament; from May 4-May 10; ATP tournaments: German Open, Coral Springs; WTA tournaments: Italian Open. WHEW!) To tell you the truth, I had already written a different article for this week, but I had only reported on about four tournaments when I had hit the 1,200 mark on my word count! Barely half way! And there was no way I could edit any of it out - because they were all important events of the past week. So I have decided to tackle this article from a different perspective - I'll be looking at the ABSOLUTE highlights of the past fortnight, with emphasis on the stuff from the past week, and I'll have to report on individual highlights rather than the highlights from a particular tournament. So, before I waste any more words, let's get right down to the nitty gritty.

Before I start, I'll just add some sort of conclusion to my last piece - kind of left it hanging there without mentioning who won the Super 9 event, the Monte Carlo Open. In the end, it turned out to be a very one-sided battle between Frenchman Cedric Pioline and Spaniard Carlos Moya. Battling a playing arm injury and nine service breaks, Pioline could not quite reverse the momentum Moya had gained, leading the Spaniard to collect the fourth and most prestigious title of his career with a 6-3 6-0 7-5 win. However, the battle raged on between two veterans of the game who have recently sustained form-debilitating injuries. Those players are former French Open champ Michael Chang and four time Grand Slam champ Jim Courier. The event was the US Mens' Clay Court Tournament. A very close battle between two legends, Jim Courier prevailed in three sets 7-5 3-6 7-5, to collect his 23rd ATP tour title.
