New season, new beginning

The new season of tennis may have only just started but things are definitely heating up down under. Less than two weeks into the 2001 tennis season, we have already witnessed some classic matches and seen some brilliant form from a variety of players from the top tier to even the lower ranked groupings.

It seems both a fortune and a misfortune to have such a big event as the Australian Open staged after just two weeks of tour tennis. It can be considered a positive thing to have the event so early in the season as it ignites the fans’ excitement and interest early on. However with only two weeks of solid match play (and for most of the top players, just one) it would be fair to say that a number of the players have not yet brought their game faces on and could come out rusty. Great matches and great rivalries are what the grand slams are all about and as a fan, one hopes that the top players come out firing with their best games and a high level of competition.

With that said, many of the top players have seemed to pick up where they left off last season. World #1 Martina Hingis is looking in very solid form in the early stages of the season, looking very sharp, very fit and confident having won her first Hopman Cup title for Switzerland. Tour veteran Monica Seles took the USA to the Hopman Cup finals and looked to be in convincing form throughout the tournament. Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams have only played a few matches thus far at the adidas International this week but both seem to be progressing very nicely with their power baseline games. Former Australian Open finalist Amelie Mauresmo looks eager to defend the title she won last year in Sydney and is playing with a confidence that she lacked throughout most of last season. Belgian teen sensations, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, are taking the tour by storm with Clijsters posting a solid Hopman Cup (and giving Hingis a scare at the adidas) and Henin claiming her second career title in Gold Coast in no less than smashing fashion.

Who will win the Australian Open? There are so many big names who have a chance to win this event and there are so many personalities to keep the fans interested as the tennis unfolds over the intriguing fortnight.
