Look for Venus to reach the final from the top half. It seems she has too much power for the girls remaining in that section, although Hingis has the best chance of scalping Williams. The finalist from the bottom half should be determined by the Serena/Lindsay quarter final match, a shame that they had to play so early on in the tournament.
3-Venus Williams versus 2-Lindsay Davenport
Head-to-Head Series: DAVENPORT leads 9-5
Last Meeting: 2000 Stanford (Hard) Final, WILLIAMS d. DAVENPORT 6-1 6-4
Hardcourt (Outdoor) Head-to-Head Series: DAVENPORT leads 6-3
Head-to-Head Series in Finals: TIED 3-3
Head-to-Head Series in Three Set Matches: DAVENPORT leads 3-1
For the third time this year, Lindsay and Venus will be playing each other in a championship round. Much to the dismay of their competitors, Lindsay and Venus feature in back-to-back Grand Slam finals, having contested for the Wimbledon title two months ago. After playing scared against Davenport for a portion of her career, Williams has convincingly taken both of their meetings this season in straight sets and has won four of their last five encounters. Yes, Davenport may lead the head-to-head series but Williams has let the momentum of their rivalry shift to her favour. Is there anything Davenport can do to end Williams’s 25 match winning streak? We saw Hingis taking advantage of Williams’s streaky play throughout the match but what led to her demise was that she did not have the physical weapons nor the aggressive mindset to finish the match off. Williams will not be facing that type of player in the finals as Davenport will be looking to take control of the points from the outset. If Davenport could correct any mistakes she made during the Wimbledon final, she would improve her first service percentage, more readily hold serve, play aggressively and deep on each of the baseline rallies and maintain consistency. Thankfully for Davenport, her consistency is back after a relatively mediocre summer campaign and has improved her form. Meanwhile, we don’t even need to speak about Williams’s form, as she is riding a 25 match-winning streak. The fact that she hasn’t been playing her best tennis yet is still winning some big matches against some big players is a testament to her confidence and her determination to eke out the big points. I have the feeling that it will be a much better and closer match than the one at Wimbledon with the same amount of power tennis, but with better quality points and a better winner to error ratio.
