FEATURED MATCHES & PREDICTIONS 1-MARY PIERCE (4) versus JELENA DOKIC (40)
Head-to-Head Record: DOKIC leads 1-0
Last Meeting: 99 Wimbledon (Grass) 4R, DOKIC def. PIERCE 6-4 6-3
Pierce has been playing some unbelievable tennis lately - it was unfortunate for her to lose that match at Amelia Island against Likhovtseva in which she obliterated her opponent in the first set before crumbling in three. Pierce will be incredibly wary of Dokic who is having her best tournament since the incredible run at Wimbledon. Of course, Wimbledon was where Dokic made her big-time breakthrough when she upset Martina Hingis in the first round and went on to the quarter finals by beating her opponent today in the previous round. This time, victory may not be so clean-cut for Dokic. At Wimbledon, Dokic was playing the best tennis of her life and she seemed incredibly confident and invincible. Since Wimbledon, her confidence shattered with a number of poor results, including the debacle at the Australian Open where she exited in the first round. In contrast, Pierce's confidence must be quite high, having played squeaky-clean tennis in her earlier matches and also playing this Tier I tournament as the top seed or the favourite, if you will. What will help Pierce today is the fact that they are playing on the clay, a surface which Pierce does thrive on from time to time, and a surface which is essentially foreign to the aggressive, Australian-raised Dokic. Dokic would like to exploit Pierce's lack of mobility, but with the slow clay may find that hard to do. Instead, expect Dokic to do most of the running due to Pierce's fierce baseline drives. Also expect Dokic to make more unforced errors as she tries to dictate the pace. With the slower surface she may find that her inexperience will cause her to become impatient, a big no-no on the clay. Whatever the result, expect Dokic to come out fighting for each and every point, but Pierce may be just that touch too solid on the clay for Dokic to impose her own powerful baseline game.
