Lindsay's withdrawal from Filderstadt and her subsequent withdrawal from Zurich may leave the door open for Venus Williams who could potentially climb to #2 by year's end. Despite being the only one in the top 4 without a Grand Slam singles trophy to her credit, she is a shoe-in for #2, considering Lindsay is out indefinitely from the tour, and has a lot of points to defend from a successful indoor season last year. Venus, on the other hand, did not play all that much in the indoor season and is looking to build her portfolio of points in the next few weeks as she tries to build on her ranking. While Martina Hingis is firmly safe at #1 until the end of the year, the spot for #2 is likely to be decided at the Chase Championships, where Davenport reached the finals last year (losing to Hingis), and where Venus Williams did not enter at all, due to a knee injury.
