The Race to the Chase.....and Jana Novotna
How Jana currently looks on the Race to the Chase is not at all an unfavourable position, although a lot will depend on some of the other players from 15-20 in the upcoming indoor season. Jana currently stands at 14th on the table, although she is vulnerable to being taken over by various players, given they can take advantage of the situation in the ensuing tournaments. However, given the recent form of some of those players in the hotspot, Jana can look positively at finishing the season and her career at the end-of-season event. Dominique van Roost is one who had a lot of success this time last year and has not really shown much of that form for the best part of this season. With a lot of points to defend and with only sub-par form up to this point in time, things don't look too favourably for the glamorous Belgian if she wants to qualify for the Chase for the second year in a row. Patty Schnyder is in the running but with the way she has played for most of the season, is only considered a longshot to qualify. This former top 10 player who was on the brink of achieving much greater success, got caught up in a controversy with health guru, Rainer Harnecker, who is wanted by German police for practicing unconventional medicine. She has since parted with the guru, but the emotional scars remain and the form is also yet to come back. Elena Likhovtseva has played well this season and has made some great strides on the tour, although her consistency from tournament to tournament is a question and one which will need to be asked of her if she attempts to qualify for the field next month. Perhaps even Ruxandra Dragomir is in for the running, as she currently stands at 15th, however the indoor conditions may not be favourable to her game and she may find herself struggling for the rest of the season.
So far, only four people have qualified for the event, and those four people are the same four people who reached the semis of the US Open, the semis of the Grand Slam Cup, and who currently stand as the top 4 women in tennis today. They are #1 Martina Hingis, #2 Lindsay Davenport, #3 Venus Williams and #4 Serena Williams. On the brink of qualifying are #5 Monica Seles and #6 Mary Pierce, with #7 Barbara Schett, #8 Amanda Coetzer, and #9 Julie Halard-Decugis looking to also make their mark some time soon.
