In this section, I will attempt to analyse the prospects of the top eight seeds over the next two weeks. I don't intend to win anyone over with my views, I'm just trying to call it like I see it as best I can see it right now. And on with the picks....
MARTINA HINGIS (SUI) Summer hardcourt season performances The draw analysis: The champion has proven that she is back from the doldrums after back-to-back traumatic Grand Slam experiences just a few months ago. Martina has won two of the three tournaments she entered this summer, winning at Los Angeles and Toronto, and enters the US Open as the favourite. Martina Hingis has a relatively safe draw until the semi finals where she is likely to encounter Venus Williams. She should make it to the fourth round with no hassles, however, she could face a tough test if Jelena Dokic makes it through to this stage of the tournament. Of course, Dokic was the girl who not just defeated Hingis but absolutely humiliated her in the first round of Wimbledon. Should 15th seed Amelie Mauresmo get through to the quarter finals, that encounter could be an absolute sizzler, and a great grudge match for both players. However, Hingis is not worried about these players. She is worried about 3rd seed Venus Williams who looms as a potential semi final opponent for her. They have had great matches in the past and although Hingis leads the head-to-head 7-3, Williams is fast catching-up to her teenage counterpart. Floaters who could trouble her in her section of 16: Jelena DOKIC, Lisa RAYMOND, Patty SCHNYDER
