Predicted Result: HUBER in TWO SETS
Actual Result: HUBER in TWO SETS
Silvia FARINA vs 4-Monica SELES
Head-to-Head Series: SELES leads 2-1
Seles wants her revenge. We remember how Silvia shocked Monica in Fed Cup just over a month ago, handing the Grand Slam champion her first ever defeat in Fed Cup competition. Granted, Seles was able to fight despite suffering some nagging injuries which would sideline her for several weeks, and she was able to keep the match tight up to the very end. Five weeks later, Seles has returned to the tour with some great form, and is getting better and better with each match. I'm pretty confident that she should be able to "whip" Farina's booty the way she used to in the past!
Predicted Result: SELES in TWO SETS Natasha ZVEREVA vs Amy FRAZIER
Head-to-Head Series: ZVEREVA leads 2-1
Natasha may lead their head-to-head series 2-1, but Amy won an encounter in similar conditions to today, emerging the victor in a second round US Open match two years ago in three sets. On recent form, I like Amy's chances of running undefeated against her opponent at the Open - remember, Frazier was the last person to defeat Steffi Graf in a professional match.
Predicted Result: FRAZIER in THREE SETS Ruxandra DRAGOMIR vs 2-Lindsay DAVENPORT
Head-to-Head Series: DAVENPORT leads 5-0
Looks like a convincing record for Davenport, doesn't it? You will bet Davenport won't be underestimating her opponent in the round of 64, as it was only last week that Dragomir stretched her to three sets in their New Haven semi final encounter. However, Lindsay is the type of player who learns from her mistakes, and will try not to repeat those mistakes in what could be an entertaining encounter between a high quality aggressor and a high quality counter puncher. Provided Lindsay doesn't rack up a huge number of unforced errors like she did at New Haven, I doubt Lindsay will go easy on her opponent today.
Predicted Result: DAVENPORT in TWO SETS PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Martina HINGIS (SUI) & Venus WILLIAMS (USA)
Both won a tournament each in the past fortnight and both head into the US Open as equal favourites for the title. The likelihood of the pair meeting in a semi final showdown is odds-on, and the likelihood of the match being an absolute scorcher is through the roof! Who knows in the end who would win the contest?! Both girls won their respective tournaments without dropping a single set, and beat some of the best players along the way. Hingis's sharp, accurate baseline game looks to have come into full fruition before the US Open, as has Williams's powerful ground and service game. I definitely like the chances of them battling out a tough match in the US Open semi finals this year!
