INTERESTING ENCOUNTERS

FIRST ROUND

Jelena DOKIC (AUS) vs 10-Arantxa SANCHEZ-VICARIO (ESP)
Head-to-Head Series: SANCHEZ-VICARIO leads 1-0
This will be an interesting battle, not only between contrasting styles - aggressive versus counter-punching - but also between players of different generations. They both have one similarity - that is they are always willing to give 100% effort on the tennis court and will fight to the bitter end. We were all impressed with the way Jelena handled herself during Wimbledon, during the media frenzy and paparazzi, and also the way she conducted herself on-court with professionalism and grace. Jelena did beat Arantxa at Hopman Cup earlier this year on a hard-court, so she knows what to expect from the wily veteran - whether she can execute on the day will be another matter altogether. Provided Jelena can keep her error count down, yet still remain aggressive throughout the match, I think Dokic will have no problems in dismissing the former champion.
Predicted Result: DOKIC in TWO SETS
Actual Result: SANCHEZ-VICARIO in TWO SETS

15-Amelie MAURESMO (FRA) vs Justine HENIN (BEL)
Head-to-Head Series: FIRST MEETING
Many predict a bright future ahead for these two young girls who have powerful baseline games and hit beautiful one-handed topspin backhands. Mauresmo has already "arrived" but Henin is yet to breakthrough as a top player. But don't underestimate this girl - she has real talent, and given more opportunities to develop this talent and more experience to handle big situations, she can become a real champion. She was the girl who won the Belgian Open in her home country earlier this year, and followed it up by coming just two points away from upsetting world #2 Lindsay Davenport at Roland Garros. Mauresmo may not be playing her best tennis yet, but she played an impressive match at New Haven when she defeated 6th seed Julie Halard-Decugis who has been in sparkling form this whole season. She is slowly on the way back to her dangerous best, and may just have enough form to beat the inexperienced campaigner.
Predicted Result: MAURESMO in TWO SETS
Actual Result: MAURESMO in TWO SETS
