However, Iva deserves a lot of credit. It must be said that she is an incredibly talented player, and was a mainstay in the Top 10 for a number of years. She plays a powerful, aggressive baseline game, and she definitely showed Martina Hingis a trick or two in that memorable final. Things look tough for Iva at the moment, but I believe that if justice ought to be served, Iva should find herself back into the Top 10 in two years time. Given the right coach who can give her an ounce of self-belief, who can help her fight her inconsistency woes and help her gain match toughness and confidence on-court, Iva should have no problem reaching the top in women's tennis once again.

Fortnightly Round-up

PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Lindsay DAVENPORT
Not such a difficult choice, this one. She struggled in her opening match against the hard-hitting baseliner, Chanda Rubin, but her game improved and her error count dropped as she progressed further into the tournament. By week's end, the world #1 added yet another impressive scalp to her list, defeating Venus Williams for the eighth time in nine career meetings. Not to mention winning her 23rd career title and 4th for the season. This is pretty impressive stuff for a person who looks set to repeat her American hardcourt triumphs from last year.

SURPRISE PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Amy FRAZIER
It's taken her ten years, but she has finally broken through. Amy Frazier got to the semi finals of the Stanford tournament for the first time in a decade! She had an impressive run, beginning with a scalp of Anke Huber, followed by an upset of the 5th seed Barbara Schett. Some of Amy's best tennis has certainly come at the latter stages of her career, and all I have to say is, More Power To Her!!

COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Chanda RUBIN
She's been back for a while, but she gave us an indication of just how strong she has come back when she defeated Irina Spirlea in straight sets, and then gave Lindsay Davenport an almighty scare in the following round. Inconsistency continues to plague her, but I hope that she can comeback strong and do some big things at the US Open this year.

UP-AND-COMING PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Katarina SREBOTNIK
Katarina is tipped to be among the top few players within the next few years. She proved that she is getting there by winning at Estoril in her first professional tournament on the WTA circuit earlier this year. Tightening a few loose screws in her game and getting the all-important match toughness will help her break into the elusive top 20. I'll give her 18 months until she breaks into the top 20.....
