UPSET OF THE TOURNAMENT: FIRST ROUND, Jelena DOKIC (AUS) d. 1-Martina HINGIS (SUI) 6-2 6-0
Not only was this the upset of the tournament, but this was perhaps the greatest upset in Wimbledon history. 129th ranked Jelena Dokic from Australia absolutely massacred 1st ranked Martina Hingis from Switzerland. Incredibly amazing!! It was obvious that Jelena had come out strong against Martina on Court 1, but what was surprising was the fact that she held that level of play for the entire match and even increased her intensity as the match progressed. Meanwhile, Martina was clearly overwhelmed by the sheer power of her 16 year old opponent, but it was in fact her mental approach which caused Hingis her greatest disappointment.

DISAPPOINTING: Martina HINGIS (SUI)
Hingis losing in the first round of a Grand Slam this year?!?!? Tell that to someone before the start of French Open this year and you would have been sent to a mental asylum! Clearly, the events of the French Open have rattled her so much that she was sent packing after her opening match against Jelena Dokic at Wimbledon. Of course, Jelena had something to do with this disappointment, but Hingis did not even play herself into the match, and made unforced error after unforced error. The time off that she is currently taking from the tour will definitely help her in regaining her mental focus and hopefully will mend the mental conflict which has embedded her psyche since the devastating French Open final.
