Lindsay Davenport wins her second career grand slam crown
Surprising everyone it seems, but herself, Lindsay blitzed the competition en route to recording one of the most impressive victories in her career. By defeating 2nd seed Steffi Graf in the singles final, the 3rd seeded American Lindsay Davenport held the Wimbledon trophy for the first time in her career, adding a second Grand Slam title to her resume in addition to her US Open crowning last year. But throw in the icing on the cake, why don't you! By reaching the Wimbledon finals, Lindsay regains the world #1 status from her rival Martina Hingis and stretched her lead to a comfortable 300 point advantage by winning the championship.

Indeed, she surprised everyone. Entering the tournament, the punters placed her at just 15-1 odds at winning the title. However, Lindsay does have a penchant for proving the doubters wrong. Many believed that she was not a good enough player to breakthrough in the major tournaments. She proved them wrong by winning the US Open last year. Many believed that she was not mentally tough enough to get to the pinnacle of the women's game. She proved those doubters wrong by getting to the #1 ranking last October. And a hell of a lot of people believed that she did not have the game nor the mobility to win on grass. Now she is crowned "Wimbledon Champion of 1999"!

What is even more remarkable is the fact that Lindsay did not drop a single set en route to the championship, reminiscent of her title run at the US Open last year. She did face some stiff opposition from 14th seeded Barbara Schett in the fourth round when she was down a number of set points before pulling out the first set in a tiebreaker. No one can say that Lindsay had an easy path to the title. Perhaps her title run was aided by the fact that Martina Hingis was eliminated well before the semi finals where they were seeded to meet. But she did defeat two of the best grass courters in the game in Jana Novotna and Steffi Graf, two former champions of this event. Certainly, her victory over Jana Novotna in the quarter finals was deemed an upset, given their aptitudes on the grass surface previously. However, it was not completely unexpected as Lindsay had won five out of five career encounters against the Czech talent. And according to the script, Lindsay defeated Novotna with seeming ease, using her power to overwhelm her serve/volleying opponent, breaking down her baseline game and passing her when she would come in to attack.
