PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Martina HINGIS
The world #1 won the German Open a couple of weeks ago in convincing fashion. None less than a 6-0 6-1 rout of Julie Halard-Decugis in the final! Who doesn't want to go with Hingis for the French this year?!?!

COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Jennifer CAPRIATI
It's been a long time coming, but Jennifer has finally stepped up her game and feels ready to compete with the main contenders of the game. Finally!! Let's hope it can go all the way back to the top this time!

SURPRISE PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Paola SUAREZ
Paola reached the Madrid final opposite Lindsay Davenport by defeating a host of seeds, including sixth seed Magui Serna, fourth seed Chanda Rubin, and the coup de grace, second seed and defending champion Patty Schnyder. She absolutely crushed Schnyder 6-2 6-0, which says a lot about the strength of Suarez (or the weakness of Schnyder). NOTABLE MENTION: Ruxandra DRAGOMIR
She was deadly against Jana Novotna. She was taking it up to Amelie Mauresmo. She was rallying hard against Patty Schnyder. One thing which is for certain is that this girl will have a great French Open. Already having reached her first major tournament final at Amelia Island a month and a half ago, Ruxandra follows it up with a semi final showing at Berlin.

UP-AND-COMING PLAYER OF THE FORTNIGHT: Justine HENIN
The 16 year old Belgian sensation is just another one of the young, up-and-coming sensations of the WTA tour. And she has done something which only four people before her have done - to win the first professional tournament she entered! Justine Henin won the Belgian Open in her home land, and was then granted a wild card into the main draw of the French Open, where she has an opportunity to play Lindsay Davenport in the second round.

MATCH OF THE FORTNIGHT: Berlin Third Round - 4-Arantxa SANCHEZ-VICARIO d. 14-Conchita MARTINEZ 6-1 0-6 7-5
No power and no aggression in this game. But there was plenty of fight in both players. After both won a set each in convincing fashion, Martinez quickly took a 5-2 lead in the third, but as she has done in the past, Arantxa fought back and won five straight games to win the set and the match, in a long, intense, thrilling match between friends and compatriots.

UPSET OF THE FORTNIGHT: Madrid Second Round - Paola SUAREZ d. 2-Patty SCHNYDER 6-2 6-0
