Winner of the French - Hingis? Williams? Seles?......Capriati?!? - Page 3

Predictions for the quarter finals:
Martina HINGIS vs Venus WILLIAMS
Chanda RUBIN vs Arantxa SANCHEZ-VICARIO
Mary PIERCE vs Monica SELES
Steffi GRAF vs Lindsay DAVENPORT

While I will try to stand by my predictions as best as I can, I do think Anna Kournikova also has a chance of reaching the quarter finals. She is unseeded and thus would play against a seed in the third round, none other than arch-enemy 11th seed Patty Schnyder. As we know what Schnyder does when she has to play against Kournikova (ie tanking matches), she is Graf's likely round of 16 opponent. Considering Graf has not really shone on the clay this year, and that Kournikova has beaten her in their previous encounter (on grass), perhaps Anna can give her fans a treat and make her first Grand Slam quarter final in nearly two years! Having said that, I also think Barbara Schett could possibly reach the quarter finals. With Jana Novotna's section of the draw opening up due to the fact that she hasn't been playing very well lately, this will give a chance for someone to break through to the quarter finals - my pick is Chanda Rubin, but Barbara Schett could just as well surprise.

Spanish title for American powerhouse
Lindsay Davenport is many things in tennis. She is the hardest hitting player that women's tennis has ever come across in it's 100 year history. She is the reigning US Open champion, Olympic gold medal winner and 1998's world #1 player. A claycourter she naturally isn't, but Davenport has found a way to win on a surface which blunts her deadly power - use even more power! Whatever her strategy is, she has proved that she is a major force on any surface in any tournament - something Jane Chi will know only too well after they meet in the first round of Roland Garros.

Playing in her first tournament since taking a month long hiatus after her wrist injury, Davenport struggled to find her footing in her opening match on red clay, losing the first set in a clumsy display against Gala Leon Garcia. Since losing that set, Lindsay did not look back and did not even come close to dropping another set in the entire tournament, crushing Anna Smashnova, Silvia Farina, Amy Frazier and Paola Suarez on her way to victory.

Although a rather predictable outcome with the top seed hoisting the trophy at the end of the week, it serves notice that Davenport has come out of her wrist injury in good form, and has shaken off any rustiness which she might have accumulated out of the tour. Can she be a force at Roland Garros? Anyone's guess is she could indeed, just don't be surprised to find Davenport playing tennis on Court Suzanne Lenglen on final's Saturday.
