Bisexuality: Information and Resources

© Alyssa Skye

Over the past few months, I have received numerous inquiries regarding bisexuality, especially with an eye to online resources. As a result, I have compiled this information for anyone who might be interested in learning more about this aspect of sexuality.

What is bisexuality? While some might consider a bisexual person to merely be confused about her sexuality, the cut and dried definition of a bisexual is a person who is attracted either erotically, affectionately, or romantically to people of both sexes. For some people, it is a step between heterosexuality and homosexuality and for others it might be a form of sexual experimentation. For many people, however, bisexuality is a normal, lifelong orientation.

As with all aspects of life, sexuality is dynamic, constantly changing. The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid ( http://www.bisexual.org/ ) takes this fact into consideration when examining a person's sexual preferences. Changing sexuality was also a subject of research by Dr. Alfred Kinsey. He developed a scale in the 1940s which is a continuum showing the various gradations from purely heterosexual to purely homosexual. His research found that a majority of people fell somewhere between the two extremes. (http://www.indiana.edu/~kinsey/ak-hhscal... )

Several websites offer excellent resources on bisexuality. Following is a list of some of the better ones that I found:

Bi The Way (http://bitheway.org/index.htm ) offers a very positive site comprised of resources, definitions, links to other resources, chat and message rooms, a matchmaker service, and a personal essay. Definitely worth a visit.

BiCafe.com ( http://www.bicafe.com ) is a site especially designed for bisexual people to socialize and meet others online. They offer both free and paid personals, stories, and a positive bi message. If you're looking for fun and possible romance, this is the site to check out.

Bi.Org ( http://bi.org ) claims to "serve the world bisexual community". With the numerous resources, links, international bi groups, informative articles and essays, and more, it certainly might live up to its claim.

GLBT--the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Links to Resources on the Web ( http://www.ccp.arizona.edu/users/tallman... ) If you can't find it on one of the other sites listed in this article, then you will most likely find it somewhere on this webpage.

While many might view bisexuality as disgusting or just plain wrong, it is important to note that it is merely one more facet of sexuality which numerous people will find themselves experiencing at some point in their lives. If we consider Dr. Kinsey's research or the information offered in the Klein Grid, there is a greater number of people who will feel bisexual attractions than not. Bottom line: bisexuality is not abnormal, bad, or an invalid sexual orientation, it is merely another aspect of someone's sexual identity, part of an ever-changing process called life.
