Control of Sexuality: Female Genital MutilationMany reasons are given for the continuing practice of FGM in various cultures throughout the world. Family honor, insurance of virginity, and faithfulness to a husband are just a few of these. Because it is custom for all of these people, many are unwilling to face the uphill battle to change tradition. Other people consider the custom barbaric, and numerous worldwide efforts have been undertaken to ban the practice of FGM. Because of the thousands of deaths caused by FGM, it is now illegal in several countries, although it needs to be noted that certain cultures still continue the mutilation of their young girls.
