Going Solo: More on Masturbation

For many years, children caught pleasuring themselves were punished and told that they would either be headed for Hell or that they would go blind if they continued to masturbate. Of course, these statements had their roots in the puritanical Christian society which dominated the United States and many other countries and still does to some extent. In fact, in earlier translations of the King James Bible, the passages which now refer to homosexuality were allegedly translated to mean masturbation. At that time in history, pleasing one's self was seen to be the bigger sin.

In recent years, however, masturbation has become more accepted for both males and females. College courses on human sexuality now provide sections on masturbation, and many parenting manuals deal with the best ways to affirm your child's self-pleasuring habits rather than degrading them. Furthermore, there seem to be many sex therapists whose belief is that, to have better sexual experiences with a partner, an individual needs to learn the art of masturbation first. The premise behind this is quite logical: self-pleasure is the best way to learn what you like and don't like in your sexual acts.

While many people believe that masturbating comes naturally, others might be hesitant or unsure of what to do in order to pleasure themselves. There are numerous websites, such as the Masturbation Info Page (http://www.techsono.com/pixplayer2000/go... that offer helpful, entertaining answers to any question you might have regarding this topic. Many sites also provide explanations on how both males and females masturbate. Another informative website with several questions and positive answers on self-pleasure is Go Ask Alice! (http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/Cat6.... .

The bottom line is that masturbation doesn't involve secret or complex techniques. Just do what makes you feel good whether that might be simple clitoral manipulation with a hand or finger or the use of sex toys. Most importantly, although many people might still paint a shameful picture around masturbation, the act itself is normal and natural from a biological standpoint. The morality of the issue, on the other hand, is something which each individual needs to deal with on a personal level.
