Coping Skills 101

Not only women with PTSD require a tune-up in their coping skills... anyone with a mood disorder should take an inventory of these skills from time to time.

In the weeks that follow we will look at some of the main coping skills which should be learned, or brushed up on:

Cognitive Restructuring

This is how we react to stimuli, do we look at it in a negative light right away, or are we able to see the positive as well and deal with it from that point. There are many exercises I will include to help in this area.

Relationships

How do we relate to others in our lives? Where do we place them in terms of our inner circle (us)? Do we let everyone in to our private circle, or keep everyone away? Relationships can be trying at any time, but in a situation where mental illness is brought into the scenario, we must pay special attention to our relationships.

Problem Solving

When faced with a problem, how do we work through it? Do we use healthy problem solving techniques to solve them, or do we hide? There are a number of excellent ways to perform problem solving.

Assertiveness

This will go along with Relationships in many cases. Do we stand up for our beliefs and rights, or do we crumble under the words and expectations of others?

Self Esteem

Learning Coping skills or giving them a good tune-up will go a long way in improving your self-esteem. We will, however, look at other ways at improving self-esteem as well.

In the next week, write down the headings above, and list how you currently deal with these coping methods. Next week we will begin to discuss Cognitive Restructuring.

So, until next week
Stay happy, healthy and free
