For more information, check out the WPFL website at www.womensprofootball.com. , The Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL) wrapped up its second week of competition. Three teams remain undefeated going into week three. The Daytona Beach Barracudas extended their record to 2-0 with a win over the New York Galaxy in Syracuse. In Texas, the Houston Energy handed the Austin Rage another loss. The Texas rivalry ended in a close 30-20 win for the Energy, giving them a 2-0 record. Up north in Minnesota, Vixens are quickly becoming the team to beat in the WPFL. With a first week win over Colorado, 14-12, the Vixens trounced the Tampa Bay Tempest 63-0. The Colorado Valkyries redeemed themselves this week with a 58-0 win over the Oklahoma City Wildcats. Finally, the New York Sharks opened up their season with a 16-8 over the New England Storm.

The Minnesota Vixens had well-rounded scoring and solid defensive play in their 63-0 victory over Tampa Bay. The scoring was led by running back Rose Skavnak who contributed 3 touchdowns, 2 running and 1 receiving. Seven other Vixens added touchdowns as well. Quarterback Missy Boyd was 3-5 in passing with 2 touchdowns. She also added 5 carries for 15 yards. The Vixens defense held the Tempest offense scoreless. Linebacker Dawn Eckstrom and defensive back Missy Otto led the defense with 3 interceptions. Also, linebacker Sandy Meredith and defensive back Jess Barthel each added an interception to the Vixen defense. The Vixens continued their domination on the defensive end with Tina Cottle’s two fumble recoveries, Busola Akinwale’s two sacks and Gwen Guntar’s sack. Tampa Bay was held to negative 20 net offensive yards.

The New York Sharks opened up their season on a positive note with a 16-8 win over the New England Storm in Rhode Island. Offensively, the Shark’s quarterback Andra Douglas and Carol Rose combined for 247 yards. Natalie Jufer had a 82 yard and a 37 yard touchdown run. The Sharks defense held the Storm to 99 offensive yards. The Storm only had 72 yards rushing and 29 yards passing. These teams will meet again on Saturday.

The rest of the games this weekend will see some more great match-ups. The undefeated Daytona Beach Barracudas take on the Miami Fury in Daytona Beach. The Austin Rage travel to Minnesota to face the Vixens. The Oklahoma City Wildcats head to the Big Apple to go head-to-head with the New York Galaxy. Finally, the Houston Energy and the Colorado Valkyries battle it out on Sunday.
