Women Speeding on the Information SuperhighwayCheck out the discussion that started the idea for this article Well, if you have found this article then you've already learned at least a little bit about the wonders of the Internet. Whether you are just a random "surfer" who stumbled across this page, or a seasoned net addict who has this site bookmarked - the Internet has affected your life in some way shape or form. My Internet addiction started back when I was a freshman at the University of Delaware. A close friend of mine from high school sent me a letter telling me that I should set up my e-mail account so we could e-mail each other. Well I did, but e-mail wasn't enough for me. The Internet had more to offer, and I wanted to be able to utilize everything it had. So a friend of mine taught me a few neat "tricks" or commands to use with my UNIX shell account. By the time spring semester had rolled around, I was "talking" with people all over the world and had met a few people face to face. One of my best friends (who I met over 4 years ago, and am still very close with) introduced me to a BBS system that was based out of the University of Iowa called ISCABBS. I started wasting my time there and eventually became a member of The Women's Room - one of their many discussion forums. It was in that forum that I realized the power people could have on the Internet to spread the word about something they believe in. I learned that I had an open stage to inform and educate people about the issues women face daily. I'd have a voice in the women's movement. It might be a small voice, but it was something which was much better than nothing. Around that time, I started working with other members to create the website for The Women's Room. It was that website which gave me the chance to join the Suite101.com team as the Women's Issues Editor. I guess you could say that the rest is history. The Internet has meant a new world of opportunites for women. These opportunities are ones that aren't based on a person's gender, but their skills and abilities. Where else can you do or say something and not have to worry about the biases someone might have against you because you are female? Most of the problems women face lie in the prejudices men have against them. Once women don't have to worry about overcoming any prejudices or biases, they are able to freely express themselves. There are few places, if any, that offer the same freedom of the Internet.
