An Introduction to Women's History Month, 2000

March is quickly approaching and so is the annual celebration of women's history. The Suite101 celebration started 3 years ago and has become an annual tradition. In the US, the annual holiday started 13 years ago after Congress passed a resolution declaring March "Women's History Month". Since that time, it has spread to other countries and more people are being educated about the important impact women have made on history.

One might say that the Women's History Month project has fulfilled its goal of spreading the word about women's history. However there is much more work to be done. Now isn't the time to ease up, it is the time to keep pushing ahead until we no longer need a special time dedicated to educating everyone about their history.

Women's History Month actually began as a week-long observance in a California school district in 1978. It was done out of necessity because children were not being educated about women's history. The problem was not just with school children, but the general public was basically unaware of women's history.

As the years went by, this annual observance grew in followers. More schools began special education about women's history. Teachers were taking the time to learn women's history, since most of them were never educated about the topic when they were in school. These teachers did this to ensure that their students got the best education and learned that the world was created by all sorts of people, regardless of gender.

It wasn't until 1987 that the US Congress finally passed a resolution declaring March "Women's History Month".

This annual celebration has meant a great deal to the study of women's history. For centuries, women have been a forgotten part of history. Their heritage was almost blended in with that of men. When in fact, women have help contribute to this world in their own way and deserve the recognition of that work.

That is why Suite101 continues to spread the word about women's history. We get the chance to be part of a change in the way people view the world. Every little bit helps in the push to educate the masses. Women's History Month at Suite101 is our way of contributing to pushing towards a world where women and men are equally celebrated throughout the pages of history.
