Never in a million years did I think I would be happy to say this, but I am. I pushed a car out of the snow!
For those of you living on the East Coast of the US (like myself) you probably have been enduring the wrath of Mother Nature's winter humor. My town has been blanketed with snow for weeks now, and some of us aren't sure if it will ever melt away. It was this wonderful winter weather that inspired me to write about women and safe winter driving. This weather has once again left me with an inspiration to share a story about how the winter affects our lives. During this last big snow storm (we've had two so far, for those of you not familiar) my own car got stuck in the snow. I tried and tried to get out of the parking lot at work, but was unsuccessful. Since it didn't seem to be letting up, I decided to stay at work overnight (work is a hotel) and drive home the next day. This was the sensible choice, and it was one shared by many co-workers that day. When the snow had finally stopped and the plows had gotten most of the major roads cleared, I made my way home and was happy to be back in my own place. Then I got a ring on my doorbell. It was my best friend Dawn, the famed editor of Roommates, and she couldn't get into her driveway. It hadn't been plowed and she needed to use my phone. Well 30 minutes later, Dawn and I are hiking down the street, shovel in hand, to clear her driveway and get her back home. I'll first make the statement that this is the true test of friendship. When you can knock on your girlfriend's door and get her to come out to shovel snow, you know you have a good friend. Not to mention the fact that shoveling snow and pushing cars can actually be a bonding experience, believe it or not! Anyway, back to our winter mess. As we were shoveling, I saw a car stuck at the end of her drive. Turns out it was Dawn's roommate and she couldn't make it home either. After laughing at the irony for a brief second, we then made our way to Shelley's car and started getting her out.
