Saying Goodbye To A Princess

© Nancy Coulter

Saturday night I was heading out the door and about to turn off the TV when I caught a glimpse at a news update. Princess Di had been in a car accident - she was badly injured, but ok. By the time I got back, she had been pronounced dead and the world starting mourning the loss of a true princess.

Some people have said that her death should be no greater or worse than the death of anyone else. It's just as sad to hear about any other mother dying, why are we making such a big deal about it? The reason is because Princess Di was a big deal and an incredible woman.

She was a single mother who overcame a bad marriage and ugly public divorce. Her sons worshipped her as did many other people around the world. Princess Di used her wealth and popularity to help the underdog. She worked on many AIDS charities and was always thinking of other people who needed help. To many, she was a saint. A saint with flaws, but saintlike nonetheless.

Of course, there are many women in the world who are single mothers and who do what they can to help other people. She wasn't unique in that way. She was a role model for women who are struggling and afraid that they can't make it. She proved that you could make it, if you wanted to badly enough.

So now, we all mourn the loss of a princess and a role model for women around the world. No one will ever forget Princess Di, or the contributions she made to our society, this I'm sure of.
