I was sitting around watching the Saturday sports programs with my brothers and all of the sudden came an ad for an upcoming sports event. I saw women running around on a basketball court, throwing the ball up for shots, fouling each other, acting like .... PROFESSIONAL Basketball Players!
What was this? A commercial for the Women's National Basketball Association, of course. Not only that, the commercial was on one of the major TV networks. This is a first for all women and one that we should all be proud of. On top of that, we are now seeing ads where there are women athletes who sponsor products. Women are becoming role models to little girls who didn't see women on tv like little boys do. Of course, the important question must be asked... is this really going to last? My brother actually asked me that. He thought that this whole "women's equality" thing will probably just pass and things will go back to "normal". As if it is not normal for women to do something men do. I quickly brought to his attention the fact that women have been struggling to be considered equal with men for a long time. This whole "equality thing" is not something new. Nor is it something that is just going to go away like some fad. One day I hope to be sitting down with my grand-daughter, watching the Co-Ed NBA Finals and telling her about "the old days" when there was a WNBA and a NBA. I'll be able to share with her the joy of watching the first WNBA game on TV. Hopefully, she'll be shocked to think there was ever a time when women and men weren't considered equal.
