Geeky Girls

© Nancy Coulter

I'm a geek; I'll admit it. Not only that, I'm a Girl Geek. I'm part of a rare breed that is thankfully growing in population every year. I enjoy spending my free time fiddling with stuff on my computer. More than once, this "fiddling" has caused some problems in my computer. Instead of worrying that I would break a nail if I fixed it myself, I just did more fiddling and was able to fix the problem - all without calling the support phone number or going to a manual.

If for some strange reason I couldn't fix the problem, then I would just turn to my fellow geeks and get their advice. Mind you, they are all men however I do understand what they are telling me. Tech-speak isn't foreign to me; I can understand everything that is explained to me. If a new term is tossed my way, I just ask more questions till I understand what's going on.

These fellow geeks consist of some of the closest people in my life. My stepfather (my brother and I refer to him as the King of our Geek family) is the person who normally gets my first "help" call. If I know he can't help, then I just turn to one of the trusty ex boyfriends - yes, that means I date geeks AND keep in touch with them to be geeky together after we have broken up. By that point in time, after combining all that geekiness, I've discovered a workable solution for the problem.

When we have a computer glitch at work, I'm the one who gets the call before anyone calls the Property Support number. Everyone considers me the "onsite" property support system. There have been a few times when the glitch has been software related and I can't fix it. That's when I've learned that just because you are Property Support - doesn't mean that you know everything about computers. Normally there is a geek around the corner, like myself, who knows more then the person on the other end of the phone.

I am the person who gets the phone call when someone in the family is having a problem with their computer or another electrical device. Even if I have had no experience with the appliance, I still get the call. My brothers, the men of the family, never get calls from people who need help with their computers. Even when it comes to programming the VCR, I'm the one people turn to for help.
