My mother is one of four children. Her father was in World War II and so she helped her mother raise her siblings. She married her high school sweetheart and stood by him through his graduate school education. One day she found him walking out the door to the arms of another woman and leaving her with 3 children to raise on her own.
I remember those adjustment years very well. I was the oldest and the most senstive to what was going on. Naturally, I was very protective of my mother and tried to help her raise my 2 little brothers. Ten years later, she has proven that a woman can do it all.
My mother didn't make the choice to be a single mom. My father made that choice for her. But she did what any strong woman would do and that is make the best of a bad situation. I admire her for her strength and courage. Some women would crumble and their children would suffer, my mother didn't let that happen.
So maybe I didn't have a big political figure as a role model when I grew up. I did have my mom. As the years go by, I realize more and more than she was the best role model I could have.
