Is The Inside Really What Counts?

© Nancy Coulter

I have to admit it, I've often used these weekly editorials to bitch about things that I've had to deal with in my life. This week's topic comes directly from some recent experience.

I'm the manager of a neighborhood pool. I've been lifeguarding for the past 7 years and there is one thing that has never changed. Women are ALWAYS viewed according to how they look.

I sit up in the chair and watch members come and go from the pool. I also watch members watching other members. This probably won't surprise you but the women wearing bikinis are always the ones who turn the heads. The mothers with kids, or the women who don't exactly have a model's body are ones who never get a second glance.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against beautiful women. I do have something against the fact that "average" women get forgotten just because they are average. They may be beautiful people, but they usually have to work a little harder to get someone's attention.

Maybe its just that I happen to work in a business where all I see is people's bodies and how others react to them. People watching can be fun sometimes, but it can also give you an ugly awakening to how we treat each other.

The thing that bugs me the most about this is the fact that it doesn't seem that men are treated the same way. Men can have a little "beer belly" and its ok. They still seem to have people interested in them. It also seems that you can often find "ugly" or average men with beautiful women, but you will hardly ever find extremely handsome man with "ugly" or average woman.

Ok, that's the end of my weekly rant. The moral of this little story? Don't worry about the cover, if what you find inside is beautiful, it will shine through.

I think looks D ...

Hi Steve...your comment about not going on "looks alone" implies that you start with looks and go from there. And that's the problem with how women are judged. While appreciation of beauty may be in-b ...

For what it's worth, I refuse to go out with women based on their looks alone. I did that in my early 20s, and quickly found out that beautiful women can be seriously screwed up emotionally, intellect ...
