This Sunday, May 11th is Mothers' Day: A day set aside for us to thank the women who brought us into the world.
Everyone has different relationships with their mothers. Some of us are lucky to have close friendships with Mom, while others may not even know who their real mom is. Then of course, some of us have special women in our lives that may not technically be a mother to us, but who have treated us like their own children. For some people, like me, their mothers are sources of inspiration and admiration. My mother has been the wind beneath her children's wings since the day we each took our first breath. I've heard her tell the story of my brothers' birth a million times and it wasn't until recently that I realized how much pride she takes in it. Not because she got through it, but because it is the story of how two of her children came into this world. (My brothers are twins; the doctors weren't expecting two and the second one almost died in childbirth) My mother has always gone the extra mile to make sure that her children got more than what they needed. A perfect example is the computer that I'm typing on right now--a birthday gift for me after my very old IBM died. She wanted me to save up my money for something else so she bought me the computer that I wanted. There wasn't always someone there with her to help with the child rearing. My father was never that big of a presence in my life and after my parents' divorce, my mother took on the responsibility of raising three children on her own. I'd like to think that she has done a wonderful job. Not all women will become mothers, that's a choice that each woman has to make for herself. I do think that all women have a "natural" feeling to be motherlike. Whether it's being a mother to a child, or some other kind of close relationship, motherhood is natural for women. So when Mothers' Day rolls around, take some time to thank the women in your life who have made you feel special. Too often they do what they do without any special recognition. And if you consider yourself to be one of those special women, Happy Mothers' Day. Got a suggestion for a future article or have any questions? E-mail me! Go To Page: 1 2
