Congratulations, You're A Woman!

So who remembers the first time they shaved their legs? Or their first period? Or the first time that they had to deal with swimming while on their period. Ahhh... the joys of being a woman. And I haven't even mentioned childbirth!

Whoever said men were the stronger sex must have been male. No one who has gone through what women must go through would think that women were the weaker sex. After all, as joyous as bringing a new life into this world may be, there is nothing fun about squeezing something the size of a watermelon through the hole the size of a softball.

Unfortunately, women don't get medals for what they go through. When you get your first period, it's not something that most girls parade around school announcing. You become a woman at that point in time, but who wants to hear you talk about bleeding? So in some weird, twisted way, women are taught that being a woman isn't something they should be proud of.

Well, I'm proud to be a woman. Menstruation, shaved legs, cramps, labor pains, sex discrimination, and everything else that comes along with it.

Some of you may have been in the Girl Scouts and remember earning badges for different topics. Wouldn't it be cool if there were badges for different obstacles women had to overcome? It would be something we could wear like a badge of honor. Well, maybe that's exaggerating things a little bit, but a girl can dream!

If you are ever in a situation where you have the chance to let a little girl know just how wonderful it is to be a girl, tell her. Let her know early on that there's nothing to be ashamed of in not having a penis. Explain to her the obstacles she'll have to overcome, but tell her how much more special that makes her. Growing up female isn't an easy thing to do, but overcoming every obstacle should just make us feel better for who we are.
