It's A SHE Thang

© Nancy Coulter

Last week I was sprawled out in the middle of my room putting together a mix tape for one of my best friends. I found the song "Ain't Nuthin' But A She Thing" by Salt N Pepa and thought it would be -perfect- for the tape. My friend and I have both been through some difficult times and have been able to survive them, even if there were men in our lives trying to beat us back down. There was a time when neither of us felt strong enough to stand up for what we wanted. However, that time has passed.

Her and I were lucky in a way. I know many women who are trapped in their lives because they don't think they have enough power to stand up for themselves. For the majority, women in this society are raised as second class people. They are expected to always do what they are told ... otherwise, they must be a bitch! (wrong)

It is nice to see more women getting ahead in this world. I can't imagine what it would be like to grow up during my grandmother's generation, when most women didn't go to college and were expected to spend their lives as a mother and a wife. Not to say that it's wrong to choose that as your path in life, however it's -your- choice to make. No one should feel pressured by society to make a choice. Thankfully, in the 20th century, women are being taught that they have more and more choices.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bitter towards men because of women's role in society. I don't use it as a crutch and blame my short comings on the fact that I'm female. I'm just aware of the fact that we don't live in an equal society. I'll do everything I can to make sure that my little part of this society is equal. After all, you can't change the world if you don't start with your own house.

In the words of Salt N Pepa: "It's a she thing and it's all in me. I can be anything that I wanna be. Don't consider me a minority. Look into my eyes and maybe you'll see."
