Giving Children A Costume Choice
Girls and boys should be able to be whatever they want to be when they grow up. Often, kids dress up for Halloween as something that they would want to be as an adult. Their costume can be a direct reflection of what they believe is their future (ok, so the kid dressing up as Barney probably doesn't see themselves as turning into Barney one day... but I think you get my point). Little boys should know that it is OK for them to be a nurse or a dancer. Little girls should know that it is OK for them to be a firefighter or an astronaut. If they get the chance to pretend for one day that they have that kind of freedom, just image what it could do for their dreams of their future. The sky is the limit, and children should know that - even with something as simple as a Halloween costume. So this Halloween, if you have a child, make sure that your child knows that they have the choice to dress up and pretend to be whatever and whoever they want to be. Let your little girl dress up as a doctor or a soldier or an astronaut or a scientist or a firefighter or a football player. Let your little boy dress up as a dancer or a nurse or a gypsy/fortune teller or a cheerleader. Teach your children that they can be whatever they want to be, no matter what their gender is. Halloween is a chance to make our wildest dreams come true, even if it's just for a day. It's also the chance for children to realize that their dreams can last a lifetime.
