March is Women's History month in the US. Honestly, how many of you knew this? Not many are aware of this designation for the month of March, which would seem fitting since not many are knowledgable about women's history.
As a woman, I remember that my history classes in elementary school were mainly focused on the achievements of white males. Of course, during February, we would learn about the "token" historical black people. By the time I was done with elementary school, I had 6 years of education about Booker T. Washington, Harriett Tubman, MLK Jr. and George Washinton Carver. Those were some of the "token" historical black figures. It gave some diversity to my otherwise extremely white education, but it still left something to be desired. I never knew there was a women's history month until I was a freshman in college and saw a sign around campus about it. Thinking about it, it made sense since there was a black history month. But then, could you imagine if they had a history month for every minority in the US? There aren't enough months to cover all of the miorities. So someone will of course get left out. It was then that I came to the realization that we need to designate more than just a month for history about a group of people. Instead of just learning about one group for 30 days, more needs to be done so that people recieve a diverse education about their history. White males have been important to our history, but they aren't the only ones who have contributed. Every day should be about learning more about our past. White men, Blacks, Women, Hispancis ... everyone who has been part of it. After all, if we forget about the past, we may just repeat the mistake of our ancestors.
