Suffrage and the Pankhursts – Part 2

Apr 30, 2003 - © Katie Anne Gustafsson

A more permanent split with Emily occurred when at the end of the war Sylvia began living with Silvo Corio, and in 1927 gave birth to his illegitimate child. The concept of marriage was not something that Sylvia agreed with as it meant the woman giving up so many of her already limited freedoms. Emmeline refused to meet either or daughter or her grandson.

Emmeline Pankhurst died in London on 14th June 1928, a few short weeks after the Representation of the People Act was passed, establishing voting equality for both men and women. Christabel died in 1958 in the USA. Sylvia died in 1960 in Ethiopia. Although all of the Pankhurst women heard the same call to battle on behalf of equality and votes for women, they went about it in different ways, and in doing so, ended up going their separate ways.
