Helpful Healing Herbs: Alfalfa to Chervil

I decided to put together a listing of some of the most popular and useful herbs of all time. Many are helpful for a wide variety of ailments although each one is known for its particular value in the treatment of a specific malady.

Although the most convenient and preferred method for ingestion of herbs today is in the form of gelatin capsules, many are also efficient in teas and fluid extracts. The choice is yours.

ALFALFA: (For bones, nerves and metabolism.) This herb has often been referred to as "the Big Daddy of 'em all!" Two tablespoonfuls, or about 10 capsules, contains twice as much calcium as a glass of milk, nearly as much protein as one hamburger, about the same amount of iron as two ounces of liver, enough B-complex to soothe jangled nerves, adequate enzymes for good metabolism of fats, and enough fiber to lower the highest cholesterol. Alfalfa is a marvelous remedy for bone disorders, as it provides a great amount of calcium as well as potassium and phosphorus along with significant anti-inflammatory elements which include copper and zinc. The alcohol in the fluid extract form tends to destroy many of the life-giving vitamins and enzymes; therefore it's best to use alfalfa in tea or capsule form.

ALOE VERA: (Minor skin burns, cuts, abrasions.) Nothing beats aloe vera for helping to heal radiation, fire or caustic caused skin ailments. When my children were growing up, I always kept one or two aloe vera plants in the house for emergency needs. The gel from a broken leaf contains the perfect medication for cuts, burns and other minor skin problems.

BAYBERRY: (Sore throat.) Also known as myrtle, this tree is often used as Christmas trees. Bayberry tea is great when gargled for relief of a sore throat. Four capsules twice daily taken with warm water or 12 drops of fluid extract in the back of the throat will also work.

BLACK COHOSH: (Dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia and metrorrhagia.) As women, many of us are far too familiar with the pain and discomfort of menstruation. 10-15 drops of fluid extract under the tongue will ease this condition, and some have said that 3-4 capsules daily work just as well.

BUTCHER'S BROOM: (Liver and kidneys.) The flowers of butcher's broom are said to be an excellent cure for yellow jaundice and, together with the bramble and broom tops, make a great remedy for all kinds of kidney complaints. Three capsules, or 1 cup of tea, or 15 drops of fluid extract is recommended for cleansing the liver. It's said to be a great aid in sweeping out all kinds of poisons from the body.
