Laughter: The Best Medicine

Looking at the clock, I realized it was almost time for Sonny to visit. I was so happy to learn that his death had only been in my imagination! I know there's no way I could get through all this without my wonderful husband and without God!

As I looked at the TV, the room suddenly flipped upside down. Hardly thinking about it and not becoming anxious, I closed my eyes and when I opened them I focused on the bed rail. It worked again! The room was back to normal. I'd been playing a game with myself to see how fast I could set the room upright whenever it flipped.

I know God helped me to discern between truth and hallucination. My delusions were so real...I know without my faith, I would have believed what my hallucinatory mind told me. I can see how people can lose their minds when confronted by these delusions. It would be so easy to get lost in that world of fantasy!

Anyone being faced with surgery, or some other causative factor that might induce this type of mental "vacation," should be aware of what could happen. It's so much easier to cope when you're prepared to realize that your mind might be playing tricks on you. I didn't realize what was going on for the first few days. I just reacted to the hallucinations as though they were real.

Satan's little demons were right there, too, trying to get me to believe it all. They came in different forms, but the Holy Spirit soon helped me to be able to distinguish the real from the false. Once I realized what was happening and realized these occurrences weren't real...I could adapt to them. I could straighten the room up and I could tell the fantasy impostors to go away.

"Get out of here, in the name of Jesus Christ!" I would say. "You have no business here, because I belong to Him."

The hallucinations couldn't stay around long when I did that. Oh, yes, they would try to keep coming back, but it only took the name of Jesus to chase them out again. By the third or fourth day, I was actually starting to enjoy the game.

Our friends Phyllis and Bob came to visit on Friday evening. We had many good laughs over what was happening. It felt so good to laugh! What they say about laughter being a good medicine is quite true. I felt much better after they left that night. Phyllis told me of a couple phone calls I had made to her and how far out our conversation was.
