"There is a definite difference." I heard Dad's voice say.
"There certainly is. There should be another room right on the other side of this wall, but there isn't one." That was Mike, Lori's husband speaking now. "Let's go around this corner and see what's there." That was Lori's voice...I just knew it...she was here! My heart started pounding as I looked toward the open door of my room. Surely they will see me through that open door, I thought, as I waited anxiously for them to walk to the doorway. Then...there they were: Lori and Mike, Eric and Amber, Sharon and Lee and Gaye and Art, too. My heart was racing as I saw all of them, including Dad and Nancy. They were in the hall right outside my door. I could see them! But something was wrong! They didn't see me! In fact, they acted like they couldn't even see the door! "I'm in here!" I yelled loudly. At my words, Carol jumped up and rushed over to me. "Don't yell...now...tell me what's wrong!" "My family...they're right outside the door! See them? They're right there! Why can't they see the door?" "It's a special door, dear...it's a very new concept in invisibility. Even though we can see right through that doorway and even walk through it, on the other side it looks like part of the hallway." She was holding my shoulders against the bed. "Now settle down. The doctor said you can't have visitors right now...that's why they're using that special door here." I tried to struggle against her, to push myself up. "If you don't settle down, we'll have to sedate you again. Do you want that?" "No, please...let me see my family!" I cried. "Kathern, there's no one out there...I told you it's all in your imagination. You just wish they were there, that's all." To get her to back off, I relaxed and rested against the bed. "All right...I'll be quiet." As Carol sighed and turned to go back to her chair, I reached for a water pitcher on my bedside table, quickly picked it up and threw it against the wall. It didn't make much of a noise though. Carol was instantly to her feet and next to me, her finger on the nurses call button. "Yes...what is it?" came a disembodied voice. "I need help in here...hurry!" Carol knew she was losing control. A nurse soon rushed in through the "invisible doorway" carrying the ever familiar syringe. I hoped against hope that someone in my family had seen her disappear into the wall.
