Static Change

Once again I was wheeled down another hallway into a noisy section of the building. We stopped at a doorway and I was sure the whole hospital was turning. When it stopped, we went through the doorway into a small room. The male medication nurse wheeled me near some other people who were busy with wires and phones. "We know you need to rest but we thought it might help you if you could do something to help us for a while," a nice looking man said to me.

"What can I do?"

"Listen, hear those continuous beeps going off five or six times? "

"Yes?" I answered.

"Well, we'd be able to get more done if you'll push this button every time that buzzer gets to three beeps. Can you do that for us?"

"Sure, it will give me something to concentrate on." I was glad for a chance to occupy my mind with something other than the usual terrifying thoughts. I listened for the beeps, and with every third one, I would push the button. I was alone until a girl came over to me.

"Hi,"she said, "how are you doing?"

"Fine," I answered.

"Yes, you are." She sounded very friendly. "I think they're about ready to take you to the next step."

"What do you mean," I asked, puzzled. "The next step of what?"

At this question she asked me again what my name was, and if I knew what day it was. After I answered, I asked, "But what room am I in now... where am I?"

"You're in Doctor's Hospital in your bed in room 306. That's where you've been all along."

"No, I can't be in the same room. It looks different and they moved the bed, I remember the long hallway and an elevator."

"No, dear, you just imagined that, you've been right here in your bed all along. No matter where you think you are you're always in your bed in room 306."

She took my vital signs, adjusted the oxygen tube and straightened the clip on my finger that monitored my blood oxygen level.

"You must keep the oxygen on, dear, your oxygen level is still a little low and you have to keep the tubes in your nose."

The medication nurse came into the room shortly after she left and put more medication into the IV tube. Not long after, I was overcome by sleep. As I slowly closed my eyes, I could see the ceiling move along the track for the curtains. It separated about an inch and I could see eyes watching me. As I drifted off, I heard voices talking and laughing.
