"Because that's the way it works here.... No matter where you are or what bed or room you may think you're in, you're always in room 306." It seemed totally confusing to me.

Every time I was taken back to "my room" it seemed different. Things would be in different places or there would be extra pieces of furniture, or maybe the door would be on the opposite side from where it had been before.

Somehow they seemed to work three days into each actual 24-hour period. I would be taken for various kinds of tests and as I was being wheeled through the halls I could hear people talking about me and laughing at how they could make me believe whatever they wanted me to. Whenever people were talking they would suddenly become silent as I was pushed closer to them.

One day, when the aid went to the restroom, I managed to get out of my room and almost got out of the hospital. One of the orderlies saw me and forcefully put me into a wheelchair and took me back to my ever-changing room. This time there was only one bed in it. In fact, I had tried to get out of bed, mumbling incoherently but the aid stopped me.

Another time, in the delirium, I slipped out of bed in the middle of the night and got clear outside before I was caught. Three nurses, two of them just coming in for the third shift, caught me that time and one of them, Judy, decided to take me back to her apartment for the rest of the night. They seemed to think that would calm me down some.

They put a blindfold on me and convinced me to get into a car, then drove for about six minutes and stopped. I was helped out of the car and taken into a building where we entered an elevator. I could tell it went up but I didn't know what floor we got off on.

The three nurses took me into an apartment and sat me down in a chair.

"Now, if you promise not to try to leave, we'll take the blind-fold off and let you look around. We know it's been hard on you so far and maybe this will give you a little break," said Judy.

"You two can go back to work," she told the others. "I don't think there will be any more problems tonight.
