Deceptions of the Mind - #3 of From Hallucination to Hallelujah

© Kathern Welsh

One episode that stands out in my mind is because it involved my friend Phyllis. She said I called her and talked two hours. This was unusual because I've never been much of a talker. I've always been a good listener and most of our phone conversations in the past had been fairly short, Phyllis talking and me listening. "Those people keep lying! Why are they lying to me?" I told her in a hushed voice. I thought I was hiding behind a door, as my doctor talked to his surgical team, swearing them to secrecy.

I jabbered on telling her they were watching every move I made and other nonsense. "Oh yes," she'd answer, letting me think she believed everything I said. Meantime, Sonny met the doctor in the hall and asked him what was going.

"Well, I went in and talked to her and she knows who she is, and where she is and what day it is, so I think she's fine"

"No, she is not fine! Did you have a conversation with her? She's still talking nutty.... She's not acting like my wife!" Sonny was having trouble controlling his temper because he feared I would never get back to normal.

"Let's have the staff psychiatrist talk to her," the doctor said.

"All right," breathed Sonny. "I want everything possible done for her! Before I went to eat, she insisted I look at men in suits tearing up the grass outside the window, on the third floor! There wasn't anyone there! Does that sound normal to you?"

"No, I'll get someone to see her as soon as possible, Mr. Welsh."

"The sooner the better!" Sonny answered, entering my room. He came over and kissed me.

"Don't kiss me so hard," I whispered. "You'll knock me off!" Sonny looked at my toes curled around the foot of the bed.

"What do you mean, Hon?" Sonny said softly, "knock you off of what?"

"Can't you see, I'm standing up against the wall, balancing on the foot of the bed? Everything is flipped again. You're standing on the wall beside me!" I felt frantic. "Can't you see? The TV is on the floor now!" Then I looked into his face and suddenly everything was right side up again. I relaxed and gulped in the oxygen. No one found out what was wrong with me until the weekend when Sonny cornered the doctor. He was really scared. The doctor said I'd had a reaction to the anesthesia combined with the medications and it was hard to tell how long the effects would last. I was totally delusional and only time would tell if I would be normal again. As day by day went by, everyone wondered if I would ever return.
