Eating Right for Life

A new year (millenium) has begun. You're psyched, you're motivated, and you want to make healthy changes in your life. Now ask yourself, how long will you really maintain these changes? For many people, healthy eating is a temporary change that is usually cut short by unrealistic goals and ill feelings when those goals aren't met. But it doesn't have to be that way. Here are a few tips that can help you on your quest:

1. Don't consider yourself on a diet. Diets are things people start and stop. Healthy eating is a way of life.

2. Don't give up your favorite foods. Don't get rid of rich desserts or fried food, just learn to keep portions reasonable and view these foods as treats, rather than staples.

3. Get out of the good and bad thinking. All foods can fit into a healthy eating pattern, but in the appropriate proportions.

4. Steer clear of food triggers. Some foods or activities trigger overeating. Treat yourself to a food outside the home so you can keep your consumption to a minimal.

5. Retrain your taste buds. Introduce new foods into your diet in a gradual process. Some new foods you might love immediately, others may take some getting use to. Don't give up. Give yourself time and try different menus and ways of preparation.

6. Do what works for you. Find what works best for you and stay with it. Don't let friends, family or co-workers lead you astray.

7. Set goals you know you can obtain.

Most importantly, stay informed. Subscribe to a nutrition newsletter, surf the web for healthy recipes and keep abreast of new informaiton that will help you stay motivated. Good luck!
