The Top Five Fashionistas of 2002

It has been a long year for many people. The economy has been slow, powerful companies have lied and gone bankrupt, superstars have committed crimes, but one thing has remained true and that has been the fashion industry. The fashions this year have been a little more subdued and less shocking, but movie stars have kept the fashion flowing out of Hollywood and into fashion magazines and entertainment TV shows. These are my top five fashion superstars for the year of 2002. Not only did these women wear incredible clothing but they also had the confidence and attitude to pull them off.

Gwen Stefani - I don't think it is possible to take a bad picture of this woman. Both her music and her clothes have always been eclectic and fun, and Gwen is the only person who could sing those songs and wear the outfits she creates. Her army boots, argyle caps, wild hairstyles and her bare midriff are her signature styles. When she married Bush singer Gavin Rossdale, however, Gwen went very traditional. The white wedding gown designed by John Galliano was simple and beautiful with a long flowing train, but it still had a touch of Gwen with a tinge of pink at the edges of her gown. Her fashion has been called everything from hip to horrible, but she is always on the cutting edge.

Sarah Jessica Parker - Not only has Mrs. Parker always looked good, but she has now proven to women everywhere that you can be pregnant and still wear high heels. It seemed that as Sarah's mid-section grew so did her fashion sense. Sarah admits that her character on "Sex & the City" had inspired her to take more chances and in 2002 she took chances in many ways. Narcisco Rodriquez designed a beautiful white mid-knee dress that expanded at the stomach with a black band just below the bust line. This design looks comfortable and it also draws the eye away from the midsection. Sarah also developed a look that was both motherly and sexy when she wore a pink Dior dress with a yellow cardigan. That lucky baby is going to be born with both great talent and a sense of style.

Jennifer Lopez - Ms. Lopez has always enjoyed the limelight and she is even leading us into the year 2003 on the cover of the January InStyle magazine, wearing a beautiful pink silk-chiffon minidress by Robert Cavalli. Light, flirty and always daring both describes the dress and Ms. Lopez. Even in a recent Gallup poll J.Lo was voted the 6th most admired woman along with Hillary Clinton (#1) and Oprah (#3). She is a chameleon of style. She can be the femme fatale wearing a dangerously low-cut Alexander McQueen black dress to the MTV Video Music Awards or look almost-almost!-innocent in a Dolce and Gabbana shirt, sweater and skirt ensemble topped off with a simple white cap that looks like a trendy Catholic school girl outfit. The inspiring thing about Jennifer Lopez is she knows how to cater to everyman's fantasy and that could carry her far.
