Fashion or the Absence There Of?

What the hell is the matter with women? Is it me or are women wearing less and less each year? Men's fashion, rearranged but always the same, continues on in their pinstriped suits, slacks, jeans and T-shirts, but women seem to be forgetting their clothes at home. I just finished watching MTV’s Video Music Awards and I was shocked to see Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears dressed like their pimp daddy was outside warming up the car to take them to their next “appointment.” This wouldn’t be a problem if it were just contained to the entertainment world. A person caught in that fishbowl of a life seems forced to tread both the trendy and the tacky to continue to be seen in the public eye. Can you imagine my surprise, and my ire, to admit that J.Lo was the most fashionable--and most covered up-- woman in the Radio City Hall? The problem is that this fashion trend isn't just contained to women in entertainment. Normal, God-fearing American women are walking down the street strutting more than just their wood wedged sandals and Jimmy Choos. Low-riders, barely-there mini skirts, one-shouldered blouses, and transparent peasant tops are all the rage and this trend has been going on longer than the summer so there is no excuse there. I’m all for the “If you’ve got it, flaunt it” attitude, but where is the mystery?

There used to be a more subtle approach to showing what you’ve got. Where is the simple glimpse of the leg and the neckline that’s just low enough for the imagination? I guess that is the part I am trying to convey. There isn’t any imagination in clothing any more. Most women's tops consist of a large table napkin wrapped around their chest. Jeans are so tight you have to hire a seamtress to sew you into them. And I don't even want to discuss the micro-mini; Those things make you looked like you shoplifted at the Baby Gap. It is one thing to be daring, but women are just throwing it out there and men are starting to gawk, and not in a good way. And If I see one more belly button I am going to go crazy. I’m a little surprised by this new trend since women are considered the more mysterious sex. Haven't we learned by now that there is no easier way to make a person (and a public) lose interest faster than to show it all and leave nothing to yourself. Mystery, the withholding of what men want most, is the key to keeping the interest and the intensity in check.
