Winter Fashion: Where to get it and how to wear it.

'Tis the season again for winter weather and the clothes that go with it. Now for people living in most areas of the country preparation for the blizzards and ice storms means sweaters, scarves, mittens and boots. I am lucky not to have to deal with this since I live in California and you may not believe me but it gets cold here too. Winter has always been my favorite time of year. Not just because it is close to Christmas but because it is the season with the most variety of clothes to wear. Sure that's shallow, but summer is much more simplistic in its fashion with a selection of shirts, shorts, and sandals. Winter, however, you have your pants, jeans, long skirts, boots, weather-resistant shoes, sweaters, turtlenecks, long-sleeve shirts, blouses, heavy coats, leather jackets. The selection is endless and I haven't even mentioned the accessories.

Numerous stores and on-line clothing websites have brought out their clothing selections in full force for winter. Two of my favorite stores have a great collection of outerwear; Jcrew (www.jcrew.com) has a wonderful collection of wool, leather and pea coats to choose from. My favorite is the twill military coat with its faux fur lining. Jcrew also offers a full line of pants, skirts and shoes to fit your winter outfits. If you're looking for outerwear a little less conservative an interesting website and store to visit would be Oilily USA (www.oililyusa.com). Oilily has an eye-popping arrangement of vibrant pink, blues, greens and purples. Along with the colors are the beautiful Nordic designs that are sewn on many of the sweaters and other clothing they have. The best way to wear these clothes is to contrast it with a dark gray or black item of clothing, by doing this you will enhance the Oilily colors.

The hardest thing about winter is how to stay comfortable in different environments, basically being outside dealing with the weather or inside adjusting to a heated room. The best combination I've always used for wintertime is a shirt, light sweater, and a heavy coat. This outfit can deal with any situation. It works perfectly even for here in California. It may be sunny here 300 days out of the year, but it still gets chilly! Most winter mornings are cold but gradually warm up during the day. So as the weather warms up you gradually remove layers from your outfit in that way you are never too hot or too cold. And it works as well in most areas of the country that snows or has deep cold spells. The trek to work can be long and cold, but once you enter your office building the temperature will be enough for you to remove your coat and as you happily thaw out you can remove your sweater as well. Just because winter is upon us doesn't mean it is time to hibernate, so get out there and mix up those winter clothes and get creative!
