The Colors We Wear

Women's Fashion is my topic and it is my jobs to give ideas, suggestions and commentary on the latest fashion trends, but after the attacks of September 11th that doesn't seem to matter so much right now. What people wear is still something I want to write about, but I want to keep in theme of what is going on in this country. Since the attacks millions of Americans have stood up and wondered what they can do to show their support. Blood and money donations have flooded into numerous charities and organizations. This has demonstrated just how quickly Americans pull together in times of crisis. Another demonstration I have found interesting is that for the past few Fridays Americans have been asked to wear red, white and blue to show our patriotism for our country. So many people every Friday have donned blue jeans, a red or white T-shirt or scarf to show their support. But what do these colors mean? There is more to it than simply wearing them as the colors of our flag.

The clothes that we wear say something about us. Whether it is to say that we are conservative, liberal, funky, high-class, etc., it is a way for us to communicate to others who we are. People all over the country are now wearing these colors to show our American pride, but there is a history behind the colors of the flag. The color red has been used throughout history to be a color of power and bravery. In American history it stands for the blood spilled by our patriots who sacrificed themselves in our fight for independence. The spirit of this country lives on in the red of our flag. Blues symbolizes our patriotism in creating the one nation in the world that believes in freedom for all and our perseverance for justice and to uphold our laws. Notice the color is most often used by police officers, most often known as "our men in blue." Our faith and desire for peace in our nation is symbolized in the color white. What people must realize is that when we wear these colors, we wear the very history of our struggle for freedom.

So what we wear truly can say so much about us. Now more than ever Americans and people around the world need to visually see that we are all in this together. When we wear these colors we are showing the world our solidarity, our pride in our country. Soldiers, police officers and firemen have always had their uniforms, and now finally we as Americans have our own.

My other job (when I am not writing for Suite 101) is in the field of fashion merchandising. We saw a tremendous drop off of business for the first 1-2 weeks after September 11. Fashion, or clothing ...
