Women have gone through a lot in history, but now we are reaping the benefits of our forebears' blood, sweat and tears. I think, however, we modern women take many things for granted: women's lib, the equal rights amendment, and childcare- and don't forget low-fat yogurt. You know, the important stuff. So I thought it was only appropriate to mark the Thanksgiving month with seven fashions that I am grateful for. Things that we just don't think about, but make our lives a little bit easier and make us look and feel good while we climb the corporate and social ladders to success. You know how much I enjoy keeping things in perspective for us ladies.
The Little Black Dress: Coco Chanel inspired it and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's solidified it as a fashion staple for every woman's closet. This became the perfect dress for anyone no matter what the body type: short, tall, thin or maybe-not-so-thin, you could wear this. And not only that, the little black dress is so simplistic that it could be dressed up with a row of pearls for the opera or dressed down with a simple coat for night out of dinner and a movie. The Sports Bra: I have no idea who invented this bra, but the Pope himself should give whoever did immediate sainthood! It not only allowed women the ability to workout and play sports, it gave them the ability to become athletes. I can't believe how many times I've heard coaches, all men by the way, comment how women couldn't be good athletes because their boobs got in the way. Like a man's jangle-bits isn't a hindrance in any way for him. Heard of a jockstrap, jerk? The sports bra finally got its due when Brandi Chastain ripped off her shirt after she kicked the winning goal in the USA vs. China soccer game to reveal her black sports bra. It was a great symbolic moment for a woman's power to compete and why this was considered controversial I will never know. I mean, what did everybody think she had under that shirt-a corset? I think not! Blue Jeans: Can you believe there was a time when women weren't even allowed to wear these? This fashion item just continues to evolve and improve all the time. Once upon a time jeans were created just to be comfortable clothes for minors and farmers, now there are actual designers who dedicate whole fashion lines to the blue jeans. And the simplistic design of yesteryear has given way to the low-slung, the boot cut, the high-waist and the relaxed-fit jeans. All science has to do now is a study proving that the corporate worker performs 50% better in the workplace while wearing jeans. That way we can wear them all the time instead of just on Casual Fridays!
