Golden Globes of 2004

I knew the day would come when I had to say this. It was something as inevitable as Bennifer breaking up or Earth making contact with Mars. I actually thought it would be a few more years before I said this, but it has come sooner than I could have imagined. I have to face the fact that I hated Nicole Kidman's dress for the 2004 Golden Globe Awards. How could this have happened? Ever since the movie Moulin Rouge, Kidman has been the consummate professional whenever style was involved. This year, however, she has taken a trip down a different path in her Tom Ford dress made of silk and sequins-a very different path. The dress wasn't hideous, but it wasn't stunning either. It was a strange combination of flapper style mixed with something "Rock Star" Barbie might wear. The gold mesh Boucheron headband still has me baffled. At almost every awards show Kidman has been known to wear gorgeous dresses with simple but elegant jewelry, but at this year's Golden Globes neither of those were present on Kidman's body. As far as the fashion scale goes, however, Nicole Kidman's dress probably rates a 4 or 5 (On a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being the best and 10 being...well, you know.) Since dresses like Bjork's stork dress and Lara Flynn Boyle's ballerina costume still top at the end of 10, Nicole has very little to worry about. And after being considered such a fashion leader maybe she just wanted to try to be different. Of course my question to that would be why?

There weren't any real "fashion disasters" as they like to call it that I could see. I was much more critical of the fashions while I was watching the show on TV, but my opinion changed once I viewed a lot of these dresses in different magazines. I had never noticed this before, but I was amazed at how different dresses looked in both print and TV. As I was watching the Golden Globes on Sunday I didn't really like Sarah Jessica Parker's Chanel dress, yet when I saw it in a magazine I couldn't help but like it. The color was a rich gray color with sequins and her shoes matched beautifully with blue-gray bows. I felt the same way about Jennifer Lopez's dress in a peach-colored dress by Michael Kors. It didn't look that great on TV, but again I saw it in a magazine and just loved it. The color matched her skin perfectly. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the silver belt that orbited her waist and turned into the straps of the dress. My two favorite dresses of the night were Jennifer Aniston's vintage Valentino black dress and Charlize Theron's yellow Christian Dior dress. Both dresses were simple, elegant and look very comfortable to be in.
