Easy Ideas for Halloween Costumes

© Anne Paxton

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and no it isn't because the candy is cheap and comes in all those cute bags. I love Halloween because it is a time when even adults can have some fun dressing up. Men often pick the easy costumes: lawyer, vampire, hobo (which is usually just their weekend attire and an empty beer bottle) or a t-shirt that says, "This is my costume." Women, however, can really have fun with this holiday. We can be a princess, a temptress, or an angel. Halloween gives us a chance to play again and let some of our secret desires come to the surface for one night.

The only drawback is if cost is an issue, as it certainly can be since some costumes can charge as much as $500 for a simple genie outfit. The solution to this problem is most often as close as your closet. Try looking in your own closet for a good idea-and I'm not talking about the hobo outfit!

Your best bet, if you want to dress in a very "now" costume, is to look to the movies for an idea. The most popular outfits this year will be Uma Thurman's "The Bride" yellow motorcycle outfit from "Kill Bill" and Leatherface from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The Bride outfit is pretty simple if you can find yourself a yellow jacket or long-sleeved shirt and then a long pair of paints. If they are cheap and you don't plan on wearing them again then take a black marker and run two lines down either side of the pants. However, if you like these yellow pants get some black tape and the just tape down the sides of the legs, that way at the end of the night you can just remove it with out any damage. Again if you don't plan on wearing this outfit after Halloween then blotch yourself with ketchup and muss up your hair for that "I just killed my archest enemy, but I feel great!" look. If not then, just stick with the pre-bloodfest look. Leatherface is a little trickier. If you don't happen to have a mask made from human skin (and you really, really shouldn't) then try taking a paper bag, cut it up and then tape and staple it back together, make two eye holes and a hole for your mouth. Be sure that your hair can poke out from the top and voila! You have yourself a genuine psycho-mask. The chainsaw is a little more difficult since you shouldn't carry anything heavy (or anything incredibly dangerous to other humans) maybe carry around a large fake plastic knife or a fake club. Leatherface was a monster -er man?-of many talents. "The Matrix" look will probably be big this year too. Just don yourself in black, wear thin black sunglasses and speak in cryptic philosophical verse and give Keanu a run for his money!
